Some of you may not be aware but CBS has actually made DESIGN history. Back in the mid-1960’s, Lou Dorfsman, one of CBS’s lead graphic designers who oversaw branding and identity, created an installation piece that lived in the company’s cafeteria. This typographical masterpiece is now in the process of being salvaged by a non-profit in Atlanta, the media has since got wind of this bringing the spotlight back onto the Gastrotypographicalassemblage.
Here’s a little more background on the piece and Dorfsman from a recent AIGA article:
“The CBS cafeteria wall is as legendary as its visionary designer and art director. Conceived in the mid-1960s and ultimately completed in 1966, the expansive wall, spanning over 35-feet wide and 8-feet tall, is a national design treasure. In producing the wall Dorfsman enlisted support from life-long friend and design legend Herb Lubalin. Lubalin, along with Tom Carnase, masterfully crafted the typography for the aptly dubbed “Gastrotypographicalassemblage.”
