Fashion’s Night Out 2011 Sports a New Twist: Online Retailers

One of the biggest nights of the year for New York City fashion retailers is Fashion’s Night Out, held this on September 8. Fashion’s Night Out (FNO) was created by Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour in 2009. Now in its third year, an announcement was made yesterday on their newly redesigned website (www.FashionsNightOut.com) that this year’s FNO will have a few new twists:

    1. This year’s Fashion’s Night Out doubles as Fashion’s Night IN. FNO CEO Anna Wintour is inviting e-commerce shops to participate with special promotions and other online events timed to coincide with the live-action madness on September 8.
    2. FNO is expanding their relationship with cable and online retailer QVC (www.QVC.com) this year in addition to QVC becoming the presenting sponsor of the FNO website, www.FashionsNightOut.com.
    3. FNO also rolled out a brand new logo and apparel on their website yesterday as well. Pictured above is model Arizona Muse (photo by Craig McDean), wearing the 2011 FNO t-shirt. This year, the FNO promo merchandise also includes a baseball hat, a tote bag, and a multi-colored fashion print for women. As usual, 40% of sales from the line go to the New York City AIDS Fund in the Community Trust.

With only 152 days until the big night, retailers are already planning how to expand and make this year’s event the biggest yet. Now a global event, shoppers from New York to LA all the way to Milan and Paris can enjoy the hottest new fashions and events. In 2010, CBS ran an hour-long, prime-time special on about FNO. Cameras followed celebrities, designers, editors and retailers as they prepared for year two of Fashion’s Night Out, taking viewers behind the scenes during months of intense planning as well as tracking the night itself as it unfolds across the globe. This special also looked beyond the glamour to the real-life implications at stake, focusing on the individuals working in all parts of the industry, from salespeople to design staff, for whom the vibrancy of the fashion business is a question of economic survival.
