The legendary Norm Winer will be honored next month by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events with its Fifth Star Award. He will be honored in a ceremony taking place September 16th at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millenium Park.
Other honorees will include The Joffrey Ballet, architect Stanley Tigerman, author Sandra Cisneros, musician Ella Jenkins and aspiring graphic artist Abdullah Quick. The event will feature tribute videos and live performances and is free and open to the public.
The press release says:
“Norm Winer has been Program Director at WXRT Chicago for 36 years, and few program directors are as closely identified with a major market commercial radio station. In a radio world often focused on playing the hits, WXRT has for decades brought new artists and music to the ears of Chicagoans. While others regularly change format and personnel, WXRT has remained remarkably consistent while remaining at the forefront of new music in Chicago and the world, and no one is more responsible for this than Winer.”
Indeed, this week mark his 36th anniversary this week as program director of WXRT. That’s a remarkable amount of time to stay at the helm of a station as significant as WXRT. In an interview, Winer said that he was overwhelmed to receive the honor.
Well, we’re overwhelmed to be a part of an organization that has Norm in it! Congratulations!
